Can you play golf in Iceland?
Yes. Iceland has around 65 golf courses and the highest share of registered golfers in Europe (6.7% of the population in 2024; Sweden is next at 5.3%). Golf is Iceland's second-biggest sport after football.
When is the season?
Roughly May to October, depending on the weather. Most courses open in May. June and July bring the long light and midnight golf. August and September are often calm and golden.
What's the weather like?
Cool and changeable. Reykjavík averages highs of 13–15 °C in June–August. Wind is part of the game, so bring layers and a waterproof. On a still evening, there's nowhere more beautiful to play.
Do I need to bring clubs?
No. Most clubs rent sets. At Brautarholt, rental clubs, carts and trolleys are available at the clubhouse.
Where should I play?
Start with the courses near Reykjavík (see Golf near Reykjavík). Brautarholt is Golf Digest's No. 1 in Iceland and 30 minutes from the city. Further afield, the volcanic island of Vestmannaeyjar and Akureyri's Arctic Open are bucket-list trips of their own.
