Cliff-edge hole glowing in late sun

Hole 2: Jökull

Not long. Never simple. On Brautarholt the sea, the rock and the wind are the defence, and they change their minds every hour.

The makers

Laid on the land, not carved into it.

Icelandic architect Edwin Roald routed the course around the edge of Músarnes to meet the sea as often as the land allowed. Michael Kelly shaped the original holes onto the rock and water rather than flattening them. Since 2022 Tony Ristola has shaped the newest holes by hand, heading north along a ridge of ancient basalt.

The shortest hole on the card and one of the trickiest to hit: a small, sloping green where long and right are both punished. On a clear day Snæfellsjökull shines on the horizon.

Local knowledge · from the clubA tricky short hole that's all about distance control. The green often sends balls that land on the right, and anything long, off the putting surface. Beware a strong north wind, and watch the ball when the sun is low on the horizon.
